Sarah began ‘gig’ work at the age of 9, babysitting for the neighbor’s children. She had her own roster / calendar / rates for the services provided. Never at a loss to find work she worked many ‘paycheck’ jobs, along with the side jobs of cleaning houses, shopping for others and helping with handy work. When she turned 21 (the legal drinking age), she began serving food / cocktails in bars and restaurants in the resort community of Cape Cod. There were always side hustles of weddings / events that she was sought out for. Tips were always part of the income. A big part. She raised two sons by way of serving in the local ‘joints’. She always preferred a great burger place to a fancy restaurant setting. It served her well. Decades of jobs that had tips included were a natural for her. At 65, she began the (no longer side) hustle of Uber, Lyft, Uber Eats. During the pandemic, she has settled in comfortably with Instacart as her main source of income. The gig hustle relies heavily on customer tips. As long as her strength and mobility hold up, you will see her in the aisles with her cart loaded for the next delivery. Tips are / will be the way she has done it ‘her way’ for decades.
